Will this Print Turn Out the Way I Planned?
After forty-six years of reduction printmaking, one would think I would know exactly what the finished product will look like. Sometimes I am surprised. As Bob Ross said, "There are no mistakes, only happy accidents." Although I am careful in my planning, each print is a learning process, and things change as I work on a block.
This is one of my favorite prints; it's a customer favorite too. Purple is my favorite color in art. It speaks to me about peacefulness, calm and quiet reflection. I love the combination of soft purple with the dark green of the Pines.
Because I was almost out of this edition, I wanted to make something new along the same line. I do not copy my blocks, but I do let past work inspire my future creations.
I decided to make a slightly larger print with a similar color palette and composition. Below is my drawing for the new image.
I planned to use brighten the contrast between the mountain in the background
and the sky, but essentially the colors were to be the same.
I printed the black and dark green first because they were the colors in the background. When I printed the the second color
I had a mini panic attack. IT LOOKED SO DARK!
I went back and looked at my drawing and the old print. I had to trust the process. When I printed the thrid color, which was the mountains in the background, I felt reassured.
I couldn't match the sky color exactly (I have switched ink manufacturers recently) but I came up with something close that I like just as well if not better.
