Linoleum Block Printing is a traditional printmaking technique, similar to woodblock printing, where I carve designs into battleship linoleum, an art-grade material. Each print is hand-inked and pressed onto fine art paper, creating original linocut prints that showcase texture and depth. Many of my Adirondack-inspired linoleum block prints are available for sale online and reflect the scenic beauty of Upstate New York.
I use a process called reduction linoleum block printing, also known as lino reduction printmaking. This technique allows me to create multi-color original linocut art from a single block. Each stage involves carving, inking, and layering colors, producing limited-edition Adirondack landscape prints.
I begin by cutting away only the white areas in the image. I then print the first color on all my paper (anywhere from twenty to fifty sheets). If printed blue, I cut away what stays blue, so it doesn’t get inked again. I then print the second color over the first on all the paper. If the second color is green, I look at my drawing and cut away what stays green. Then I print the third color, cut that away, then print the fourth.
Because I continually cut away from one block, I cannot reproduce the image without starting a brand new block. This ensures a limited edition.
Because each linoleum block print is hand-pulled, I cannot resize an existing piece. However, I often create custom linocut prints and commissioned Adirondack landscape block prints in different sizes or colors. You can also choose from birch bark picture frames or custom birch bark frames to complement your artwork. As an Adirondack printmaker based in New York, I enjoy working with clients to create one-of-a-kind art that fits their space perfectly.
Each limited-edition linocut print takes many hours to create, depending on the size, detail, and number of colors. On average, Adirondack landscape print or full moon print may require 20–50 hours of carving, inking, and printing. Every piece is a labor of love, making these handmade block prints truly unique works of art available for sale online.
Many of my Adirondack landscape prints and scenic New York notecards are inspired by my walks through Upstate New York and the Adirondack Mountains. I sometimes work from photographs when capturing a specific location, but most of my original linocut art comes from memory and imagination. My full moon prints and golden retriever print were inspired by nighttime walks with my dog, Lilly — moments that reflect the quiet beauty of the region.
